Description
Collection SummaryA collection of several thousand volumes including early printed works, first editions, limited editions and illustrated works with an emphasis on Australiana. DescriptionThe Rare Books Collection features significant works, ranging from early printed books and first editions to richly illustrated volumes and limited-edition publications.
Key strengths of the collection include:
• Early Atlases and Voyages
• Natural History
• Nineteenth Century Magazines
• Australiana
Highlights among the early printed works include The Book of Martyrs by John Fox (1631-1632) and Francis Willughby’s Ornithology (1678). The Australiana holdings feature rare and significant items such as Captain John Hunter’s Historical Journal of the Transactions at Port Jackson and Norfolk Island (1790) and a volume of John Oxley's journals from his 1817-1818 expeditions into the interior - a gift from Dr P.A. Wright former UNE Chancellor.
The Rare Books Collection has been shaped and strengthened through the generosity of early benefactors to New England University College and Armidale Teachers’ College, and continues to grow thanks to donations from UNE academics, staff, alumni, and the wider New England community.
