Russell John Oakes was an Australian writer of short stories and plays, perhaps best remembered for his play Enduring as the Camphor Tree.
Oakes was born around 1909 in Paddington, New South Wales, and served as an officer in the Australian Army during World War II, including deployments in New Guinea.
Following the war, Oakes established himself as a versatile author producing verse, short fiction, and a range of plays. His works remain a valuable insight into early postwar Australian drama.
