Hindmarsh, Mary
Mary MacLean Hindmarsh (1921–2000) was an Australian botanist and academic. Born in Lismore, New South Wales, she studied botany and geology at the New England University College in Armidale, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1943 before later completing a PhD at the University of Sydney.
Hindmarsh went on to build a distinguished academic career in botany. After teaching and working as a demonstrator at the University of Sydney, she joined the New South Wales University of Technology (later the University of New South Wales), where she lectured in botany and helped establish an important herbarium collection used for research and teaching. She was promoted to associate professor in 1972 and played a significant role in developing botanical research and teaching at the university.
Her research focused on plant cytology and rainforest species of New South Wales. Hindmarsh was also active in the Linnean Society of New South Wales and contributed to supporting biological research through the organisation.
