Torbay, Richard

George Richard Torbay served as the 7th Chancellor of the University of New England (2008 - 2013). In 2007, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the university in recognition of his extensive service to the regional community and the tertiary sector.

Torbay’s influence extended significantly into local and state politics. He served as the Mayor of Armidale (1995–1998).  In 2007, he was elected the 30th Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, becoming the first independent member to hold the position since 1913. He was the Independent Member for Northern Tablelands in the NSW Legislative Assembly (1999 to 2013).
