Phillip Arundell Wright, CMG was a prominent New England pastoralist and philanthropist who served as the second Chancellor of the University of New England (1960 to 1970). A foundational figure in the university’s history, Wright was instrumental in the 1938 establishment of the New England University College and served as Deputy Chancellor during its formative years. Wright’s tenure as Chancellor was marked by profound philanthropy, including the donation of property, scholarship prizes, and the university’s ceremonial mace.

His leadership oversaw a decade of institutional growth following the era of Sir Earle Page, and his contributions are memorialised through Wright College, Wright Village, and the naming of the original central courtyard fountain.

His lifelong advocacy for regional education was balanced with his management of the Wallamumbi and Wongwibinda pastoral holdings, which formed the basis of his extensive local influence. He was awarded Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in recognition of his service to the community and his instrumental role in the regional university movement.
