Robertson-Cuninghame business records, family papers and photographs
This collection comprises comprehensive business records and family papers of the Robertson-Cuninghame family relating to their properties in both Australia and Scotland.
The first consignment (c.1986) contains three main groups: (a) papers and correspondence associated with the administration of "Strachan" property near Deepwater, NSW; (b) papers and correspondence associated with the administration of the Scottish estate "Auchenharvie" at Saltcoats, Ayrshire, consisting mainly of correspondence and papers received from Joseph Kirkland, Solicitor and Factor of the estate; and (c) family correspondence, documents, and photographs of older and more recent origin, including six Letters Patent (c.1590–c.1610) associated with the granting of lands and titles to the Cuninghame family, and two manuscript genealogies of the Earls of Glencairn's family and the Auchenharvie branch (c.1760–1800).
The second consignment (1997) contains additional Auchenharvie estate records providing excellent detail about the management of the Scottish property, including rent rolls (1917–1925), correspondence (mainly from 1915–1925 from the Auchenharvie Estate Office and legal firm Strathern & Blair), and statements of income and expenditure (1916–1926). Many pieces of correspondence in 1915 refer to matters in the estate of Captain Cuninghame who died on 8 June 1915.
The family was based at Deepwater on the property Wellington Vale, and another related holding in the UNE Archives is a letter from Wellesley (later Duke of Wellington) to a family member who was an army colleague.
The collection includes extensive letterpress and carbon copy books documenting correspondence (1913–1970), financial records including ledgers, cash books, and investment records (1909–1971), estate balance sheets, property records, school exercise books from Toowoomba Grammar (1901) and The Armidale School (1902–1904), and family correspondence.
