George Piercen Devine was born in Bishops Bridge, NSW in 1881 to Joseph Devine, a storekeeper, and his wife Sarah (nee Sunderland). He began his photography apprenticeship under George A Solomons of Tamworth in September 1899. Upon the completion of his three-year apprenticeship in 1902, he purchased his first camera and began working for himself in the Tamworth and Quirindi district. Devine eventually settled in Inverell and opened Devine's Studios in December 1904.
