"After the war we scrounged up all the corrugated iron and built something like that. Corrugated iron, and iron matting floor. And the next house was right next door so there wasn’t much room.
The whole family, including our grandparents, lived there. That made about eight people in that building and we had a bit of a trade store too. We’d sleep there and trade there."

Q: What type of goods did you sell?
"… very, very basic materials – tinned food in the form of bully beef, tinned fish, riche, a form of clothing material which the natives made up into what they call lap-lap and shirts and T-shirts, plus a few oddities like mirrors and combs and that type of material."

The girls dressed in Girl Guide uniforms in photograph 1 are two of Gerry Chan’s aunts. On being asked about how many Chinese belonged to the Girl Guides and Boy Scouts, the type of activities they did, and who organised them, Gerry Chan wrote the following response:

"Chinese Boy Scouts and Girl Guides had their separate Groups. They were mostly organised by Teachers and ex-Scoutmaster
(Australian) who led and supervised them. Their activities differed little from that in Australia, mostly camping, picnic, mountain climbing, walking, boating, and fishing, sports, singing and acting etc. Miss Egan was a Girl Guide leader while she was a teacher in Rabaul High School, as I remembered also a certain Company employee was once a Scoutmaster. The total number exceeded 100 in both groups."

Gerry Chan also noted ‘I was a Scout, too’.
