Cyprus
Pottery first appeared in Cyprus at the end of the Neolithic Period, with Red Polished Ware predominating from the beginning of the Bronze Age. The chronology and types of Cypriot pottery for the Iron age were first established by Einar Gjerstad based on the excavations of the Swedish Cyprus Expedition (1927-1931). Gjerstad's schema was revised in light of later research, including that of Professor James Rivers Barrington Stewart, Australia's first Professor of Middle Eastern Archaeology. The extensive collection built by James and Eve Stewart from their own Cypriot Expeditions (1955-1961) is housed in the UNE Museum of Antiquities (UNEMA).
